Airbus U740 Valkyrie Completes First Flight in Europe

The U740 Valkyrie uncrewed combat aircraft, developed through a partnership between Airbus and US-based Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, has successfully completed its first flight in Europe. In a statement issued on October 12, 2026, Airbus announced that the aircraft, designed to meet the operational requirements of the German and other European armed forces, is expected to be combat-ready by 2029.
During the flight at a test facility in Northern Europe, the Valkyrie performed a runway-independent, rocket-assisted takeoff. The aircraft conducted maneuvers at various altitudes and speeds of up to Mach 0.8, while also successfully completing tests involving in-flight mission adjustments. The next phase will involve more advanced flight testing with Airbus’ AI-enhanced MARS mission management system.
Measuring 9.1 meters in length with a wingspan of 8.2 meters, the U740 Valkyrie has a maximum takeoff weight of approximately three tonnes, a range exceeding 5,000 kilometers, and a service ceiling of 45,000 feet (13,700 meters). Equipped with an internal weapons bay and external underwing payload stations, the aircraft is designed to operate autonomously or under the command of crewed fighter aircraft such as the Eurofighter. The Valkyrie is intended to support crewed combat aircraft during high-risk missions.
